The other day I (Brooke) was guided to watch a Christian Minister named Mark Lowry. My first impression of him was that he was unpolished. His vibe was authentic, and he was unapologetically himself. He was telling Bible stories about Jesus and Mother Mary that we have all heard more than once, but he was bringing humor and a fresh point of view. He also shared personal stories about himself that made him relatable.
At one point, he shared that at the age of eleven he went to the alter of his church and asked the Holy Spirit to grant him two things. One was that he would have an interesting life. The other was that he would be able to do something that would outlast his life.
I was stunned at his maturity at such a young age. Later that week, I was doing a session and I recalled a couple of his stories. The beautiful client in the room said, “It’s funny that you are recalling Bible stories about Jesus and Mother Mary, because last Tuesday I found a version of the song Mary did You Know that I couldn’t wait to share with you”. She played the song for me. It was so incredible that the chills on my arms had chills.
In telling me about the song, she said Mark Lowry wrote it. I did not actually hear “ding, ding, ding”, but I would not have been surprised if I had. Who knew? As it turned out the Christian minister was also a singer/songwriter. Then I realized that the Holy Spirit had made sure that the eleven year old boy’s prayer was answered. The song Mary Did You Know, in case you’re not familiar with it, has been sung by many artists for decades and will outlast Mark’s life.
I think I felt what the statement “basking in the glory” meant. We both sat silently with the serendipity of it all. I realized I could access the knowing that there is something greater that I can lean into at all times, and feel safe because it is all working out.
