Greetings from all of us here at Serenity Now.
The other day I was led to watch an episode of the TV series Big Bang Theory. If you’re familiar with the series you know that Sheldon, the main character, is fun to watch. Except for me it’s painful because I find myself identifying with him. Not the genius part, but the socially awkward part, it gets to be too much. I know am socially awkward and just don’t know what to do about it.
His lack of self-awareness is amusing until I look back on my own beliefs and mindsets that were totally off the mark and wow! Holy moly, I just didn’t know that I didn’t know.
In this particular episode, he had put everything that meant something to him into this particular theory. He was almost practicing his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize that he would be winning. Then someone brought to his attention that his theory was not original, and that a scientist had come up with the exact same theory. Not only that, this person had disproved it in the 1970’s.
He found himself in the lowest place he had been in his life. Leonard, his reluctant best friend, found an old tape that Sheldon had the foresight of making when he was a child just for an occasion like this.
As Sheldon was embracing this helpful tape he found out that his Dad had taped over it with a video of a football game, reminding him that he despised anything related to his Dad. Therefore hating sports.
Just when he thought it couldn’t get any worse it had. How many times have I experienced this since the first time I heard word “covid”.
Now he knew the bottom had dropped out but decided to watch the tape anyway. To his surprise he saw his Dad, the football coach, giving a talk to his young team in the locker room. Not a pep talk but the exact opposite. He said you are going to go out there and lose, not only that, you are going to be humiliated but when you fail, how you handle the failure is a major component of how you handle the rest of your life.
It was just what Sheldon needed to hear and the episode had a happy ending.
