Greetings from all of us here at Serenity Now,
I (Bonnie Brooke) want to thank all of you for the incredible outpouring of support, congratulations, hugs, e-mails, flowers and phone calls that we received to help celebrate our 5th year anniversary during the month of April. There are no words to describe my gratitude.
As I was writing the above paragraph the famous Charles Dickens words “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” came to me, because wouldn’t you know it, in the midst of the celebration that was going on many of you who were coming in were experiencing problems of unbelievable magnitude.I remember in one week we had two phone calls from folks who were at the brink of suicide (literally) and didn’t know where to turn.I was blessed enough to be the person that received both phone calls and I could not repeat what I said, but I do remember asking God to please put the right words in my mouth and let me be a channel for His Love.I know my prayers were answered; both people are alive and well. Thank You God.
Others who came in were experiencing varying degrees of exhaustion, feelings of overwhelm, sadness, depression…, and I found myself responding pretty much with the same answer, no matter what the problem seemed to be.I remember so many times to remind them of Romans 8:28 which states: “all things work together for good.”It does not say some things, it says all things….
No wonder they were feeling exhausted. They had not only been swimming upstream, plus they had also been pushing the river.I reminded them that they had earned the right to float on an inner tube with a piece of straw between their teeth. I reminded them of the autonomic functions in the body, which are activities performed without Conscious Control or sensation: heart rate, digestion, salivation …
By the way did I tell you that I myself was having a few days of extra-ordinary challenges?I even had the thought of going outside the store, using my cell phone to call Serenity Now saying “I am feeling a little bit suicidal today, can I talk to somebody there who may be able to help me?”
It came to me that really one word was the answer to all the problems I was hearing about or thoughts that I was experiencing myself, it was Trust.As a matter of fact, I picked the Development of Trust as the theme for the month of May.
Please indulge me by letting me share a little story with you.A few weeks ago I was watching a movie called “Mr. Destiny.” I hope you know that I am embarrassed to confess I was actually watching a movie with such a corny title.
The main character was having his 35th birthday and as fate would have it he was experiencing a day from h---, which reminded him of exactly 20 years ago, his 15th birthday where by missing a pitch during a baseball game he lost the game for his high school, let his coach down, let his home town down and generally became known as the “biggest loser.” His whole life he had regretted that day and wondered what his life would have been like if he had made the pitch. On his 35th birthday an angel appeared to him and gave him his wish, a view of alternate outcomes. On the surface everything about his life seemed better, he lived in a mansion instead of a broken down 2 bedroom.He was the CEO of the company instead of a lackey and????... But as he found out more about his new Life, he found out that the things that mattered to him the most were missing, for example his wife whom he had met during the ill-fated baseball game.They had met after he had missed the pitch, because she came to console him.What he realized was that everything in his life had happened for a reason.Of course the angel, being an angel gave him back his old life except this time it was not marred by regret and what ifs, could haves, and should haves.
A Course in Miracles states: Trust settles every problem now. (Page 558 of text)It also states on Page 19 of the 1st Edition of the Text. “The children of God are entitled to the perfect comfort that comes from perfect trust.” To me it is saying Relax and enjoy the ride.
