Greetings from all of us here at Serenity Now,
I (Brooke) just wanted to send my heartfelt thanks to each of you for all the support you continue to give us.
The other day I was watching a National Geographic program titled “Lincoln Hall: Miraculous survival after being declared dead on Everest.” Any time I hear the word miracle (especially in the mainstream media) I find myself drawn to it like a moth to a flame.
The program was very appropriately named. It was about a climber, Lincoln Hall, who had 30 years of experience as a mountaineer. He had faced many challenges in order to climb Everest. On average, it costs about twenty-five thousand dollars to make the climb. He had spent 2 months acclimating to the low oxygen levels. In order to make it to the summit, he had to traverse an area called the Death Zone (they do not call it that because of it’s ideal conditions for a picnic). Above 2700 feet elevation, human life is most at risk. This high altitude is the reason 90% of people who try to climb Everest never make it to the top.
Lincoln Hall had been climbing for 19 hours, when he saw the frozen body of one of his own team members, (about 200 bodies are left on the mountain because it is too dangerous to bring them down). He is now completely shaken up, but keeps climbing. He FINALLY makes it to the top, but now faces the most dangerous part of climb-- the descent.
100 feet into the descent, Lincoln started to suffer from high altitude cerebral edema (when fluid shifts inside his brain, causing it to swell). The condition is also called “altitude crazy” with symptoms of hallucinations and irrational behaviors. The rest of his team tries to drag him down the mountain, but they could do only so much before they put their own lives in danger.
Eventually, he slipped into a coma; they could not feel his pulse. They finally had to leave him, declared him dead and took his belongings. He was now left alone without oxygen, water or shelter. Some time later, Lincoln wakes up and realizes where he is! About his experience he says: “I had to believe I was not going to die, because otherwise I would not have been able to face that impossible set of circumstances: the hypothermia, the exhaustion, the dehydration, the cerebral edema; it was a death sentence. I had to utilize everything that I had learned over 3 decades of mountaineering.” He started to meditate and used breathing techniques he had learned during yoga.
This is when the miraculous events started to happen. Weather begins to change forming a blanket of clouds over Lincoln, preventing the temperature from dropping below 25 degrees. His good fortune continues, when a group of 4 climbers find him and a rescue mission is launched to bring him down the mountain.
Lincoln Hall’s greatest achievement was not that he had made it to the summit, but that he made it down alive.
He should have frozen to death, but he didn’t.
He should have died from cerebral edema, but he didn’t.
His survival eludes explanation by medical science.
And this brings me to our theme of the month: Expect a Miracle. Lincoln Hall’s story resonated with me because many of us are feeling like we are up against a set of impossible circumstances, and this is exactly when we have to believe and expect a miracle.
Many times since I have heard this story, I have felt that I was up against a hurdle that I couldn’t overcome. Then I find myself saying “At least I have oxygen, or, at least I have water and shelter, and if Lincoln Hall could expect a miracle and receive it, then so can I.”
